Blooming Onion

Fancy, but easy, beer battered deep fried onion.

Prep the onion:

  1. Remove the dry outer part of a large onion
  2. Slice a tiny part off the bottom, root end, so the onion can stand.
  3. Slice the onion almost all the way through to the bottom, with 4 perpendicular slices.
  4. Remove most of the center core, leaving the bottom attached.

  1. Soak in ice water several hours or over night. This will open up the slices.
  2. Drain and dry well, at least 30 minutes to a couple hours.

Seasoned Flour Ingredients: Mix Together

  • 2 c flour
  • 2 t paprika
  • 1 t cayenne
  • 1 t pepper
  • 1 t vegetable broth powder
  • 1/2 t poultry seasoning

You will also need the liquid from a can of garbonzo beans

Yep, garbonzo bean liquid.... Chickpea liquid...

It acts just like an egg white and helps glue the batter on to the onions!

You can use a little plain soymilk, (with only soybeans and water on the label), if you absolutely cannot do the garbonzo liquid... but it doesn't work as well

Beer Batter Ingredients: Mix together

  • 1 1/4 c flour
  • 1/2 c cornstarch
  • 2 t paprika
  • 2 t salt
  • 1 t pepper
  • 1 t vegetable broth powder
  • 1 12 oz can warm beer

  1. Directions:
  2. Dip onion in Seasoned flour
  3. Dip in garbonzo bean liquid or soy milk
  4. Dip in seasoned flour again.
  5. Dip in batter
  6. Deep fry in Hot oil, until deep golden color.
  7. Remove and Sprinkle with salt immediately .

  • Great as is, or serve with mustard, ketchup, your favorite dip or salad dressing
  • You can use this recipe for beer batter onion rings or beer batter potato wedges, or beer batter anything actually!
